2023 was dubbed the year of the girl and babyyyy I was here for it. It was marked by Taylor Swift and the Eras tour, the Barbie movie, hot girl walks, girl dinner and bows on literally everything. My kind of vibe.
Critics questioned, however, why adult women were leaning into this aesthetic and why girlhood was so appealing to adults. I honestly think those critics kind of missed the point. Let’s not get it twisted—I believe girlhood is for everyone. It is to me, at least. It’s why I started Substack and why I named mine Older, Wiser, Hotter. I’m here writing about my life as a woman in her 30s. I’m here to write content for the girlies. I want this space to be a celebration of what it means to be a woman. It’s meant to be empowering, a stake in the ground, a middle finger to the patriarchy.
It’s having fun and feeling fabulous.
It’s the magic of female friendships.
It’s sipping on peppermint mochas while browsing Christmas decorations at Target.
It’s tying ribbons on coup glasses.
It’s press-on nails and spritzing perfume.
It’s journaling in your pjs with eye jellies on.
It’s having a favorite lip gloss.
It’s being generous with compliments.
It’s adding charms to your bags.
It’s hyping up your bestie.
It’s buying flowers at Trader Joe’s.
It’s vision boarding on Pinterest.
It’s putting bows in your hair.
And the girls that get it, get it.
Period.
To be honest, I haven’t known what to share here since the election results sent shockwaves around the world. And as a woman, I’ve felt crushed, numb, and exhausted over it. Content for the girlies felt hollow, silly, and frivolous. How did we go from the year of the girl to this? And I understand that trends like tradwives, old money aesthetic and vanilla girl were all signs. I get it, fashion is political. And admittedly, I love fashion and I can even see it within myself (fancy girl era anyone?) but just so we’re clear—none of that means my own views skew to the right. Far from it. But I’ve finally reached the point where I’d like to move forward and put one foot in front of the other. And it starts with writing this.
Ya know that part in the Lion King when Simba talks to Mufasa in the sky? Simba is feeling really down on himself because he’s convinced he can’t save everyone from Scar. And Mufasa simply says,
Remember who you are.
👏Remember👏who👏you👏 are.
Simba’s the freaking lion king.
He just forgot and had to be reminded.
I need to be reminded of who I am too sometimes.
Except I don’t look to a dead dad in the sky, I look at my astrology chart.
Yes bestie, I’m an astrology girlie. The deeper I dive into my own chart, and the charts of my loved ones, I’m so mind blown by it all. So many things are written in the stars, whether we realize it or not. And today I’m not going to share a deep dive of my own chart—I’m going to read my Substack’s chart.
If you didn’t already know, a business, creative endeavor or any sort of project can have an astrology chart. (So cool, right?) My Substack has a vibe, an energy and a life force all on its own, and this past week, I needed to be reminded of what Older, Wiser, Hotter is all about.
My first post was shared on July 9th of this year at 8:45 in the morning—so that’s what I consider her birthday. That makes Older, Wiser, Hotter a Cancer Sun, Leo Moon and Leo Rising. A summer bb. I love her. Let’s break it down.
Leo Rising
Your rising sign is essentially how you project yourself out to the world, and it’s typically people’s first impression of you. It makes complete sense to me that Older, Wiser Hotter is a Leo rising. Leo is a fire sign, and the vibes include
THAT girl energy
Bold fits
Limitless creativity
More is more
Red lipstick
Boss babe vibes
Confidence
I mean, even just by the name, she is a Leo rising for sure, right? If you go to my About page, that first image is giving Leoooo. If you’re here (and you don’t know me in real life hehe), it's probably because these are the vibes you were met with initially. Or at least I can guess. Maybe tell me in the comments? I’m so curious actually!
Leo Moon
Older, Wiser, Hotter is a little fire bb because her moon is also in Leo. Your moon sign is all about your emotional landscape and the inner you. It’s like this Substack has a little lion heart—she loves big, is fiercely loyal, she has a flair for the dramatic and is a mix of strength and sensitivity. She wants to be in the spotlight, while hyping up her besties at the same time. But I think my favorite part about my Substack’s chart is that all this fire and confidence is grounded by her…
Cancer Sun
Your sun sign is central to who you are. It’s the essence of you, it’s how you shine—and I love that my Substack is a Cancer sun. Cancer is a water sign and when I think of Cancer’s, I think
Soft, sweet, emotional
(But also don’t mess with her or her people tysm 🦀)
She wears her heart on her sleeve
She’s nurturing by nature, like you kinda wanna cuddle and eat chocolate chip cookies and cry with her
She’s intuitive and introverted—she wants to have intimate, one on one convos and she’s probably going to overshare
Pearls and tulle, for sure
So what does all of this mean for you as a reader? What this tells me is Older, Wiser, Hotter is a place to have fun. You can come here if you need a boost of confidence, or if you need a pulse on the current vibe. I hope you read essays here and laugh and have a good time while doing it, because omg do we need it now more than ever. But underneath the silliness, I hope you also read words here that make your heart swell a bit, make you smile or feel less alone. Outwardly, OWH is flashy and confident, and as you get to the core of her, I hope you see she’s truly just a girlie with a big, empathetic heart. I’m not sure what 2024 will be the year of, but I know the vibe here will stay as immaculate as possible as long as I’m writing—it simply has to.
And the girls that get it, get it. Period.
xx Kristen
